Last month I applied for a spot in the Collective Quarterly Portfolio Showcase. They were going to choose 45 participants to attend a workshop at Chico Hot Springs in Montana. The decision was based off of your application and portfolio. I am always weary of applying to these things, there are a lot of them, and I only apply to certain ones if it truly seems worth it and this one did, however I did not feel confident. My wife actually talked me into applying to just see if I could win a spot.
After a month went by, I honestly forgot about the workshop, until last Tuesday morning. I received an email from the founder of The Collective Quarterly congratulating me on being accepted to the portfolio showcase. I was in complete shock. I am not sure how many people applied for this, but I would have to guess at least a few hundred, possibly thousands. And out of all those people, I was chosen.
I am not the type who takes praise well, I just don't like it, because I am so critical of myself and work and never think what I do is good enough. But then this happens and it puts me in a shock of disbelief, there is no way I am good enough for something like this. Which now leads to my next panic.
If I don't think I am good enough, then how is it going to affect my time in Montana when I am meeting with creative directors from the nations top publications and showing them my portfolio. I have a real chance here to make some huge connections in the industry and I am in panic mode. Not to mention I am an introvert, that doesn't do well meeting new people and networking. And this whole week is going to be one long networking session. But, even through all of that, I am still beyond excited to be able to go and I cannot wait to see the beautiful big sky in Montana. I have been once before, back in 2007 and it was one of the most amazing places I have been.
Past trips I have always crowdfunded because I like to give anybody the opportunity to be apart of my journey as a photographer. If you appreciate my work, would you consider supporting me on this trip to further my career? Everybody who donates will receive an epic print from the trip to show my thanks.
